Robespierre and the Reign of Terror

The Reign of Terror was a period of violence that occurred 15 months after the French Revolution and took place between September 5th, 1793 - July 28th, 1794. The number of people who were killed went from 20,00 to 40,00. The guillotine became the symbol of executions. Many well known people were executed from this blade. The executions were done publicly in front of an audience to show people what will happen to those who didn't support the government.

Maximilien Robespierre thought he had to punish people who didn't support them and didn't like to forgive anyone. He believed the French Revolution could till be going on and tried erase anything having to do with it by executing people.

The French Revolution

1) Many people didn't like the upper classes like the nobles, kings and clergy because they either didn't pay taxes or they paid close to nothing. They thought this was unfair because they had to pay a lot of money.

2) A French peasant in 1789 might probably been saying how unfair it is that they have to pay more in taxes than the upper class.

3) The cartoonist was showing the three estates and how the lower class was supporting the higher classes.

4) The author was describing how they didn't like how unfair it was that they were complaining that they were poor and didn't have much to pay in taxes.

5) This does explain that they were poor and that they werent making much money.

6) John Locke would have agreed or inspired by this because he believed in the same thing

7) The government probably banned it because they probably didn't agree with what was being said.

John Locke and "The Enlightenment"

John Locke was an Enlightenment thinker. The ideas he had influenced Thomas Jefferson when he wrote the The U.S. constitution. In the second paragraph of the U.S Constitution, one of John Locke's thoughts were in and is talking about rights saying that all men are created equal. It also says that the government was made to secure rights and make people safe and happy. They got their power from the people who organize their power to make rules. If the government doesn't follow rules, it should be changed or abolished.

Copernicus and the trial of Galileo

Heliocentrism is a theory in astronomy saying that the sun is in the center of the solar system. This is the opposite of geocentrism which is the theory saying that the earth is the center of the universe. People actually thought the Earth was the center of the universe and all other planets revolved around us. This was then proven wrong later.

It was thought by Aristotle and others that everything circled around the earth. It wasn't until the 16th century that Polish mathematician and astronomer Coprnicus, gave a mathematical model of a heliocentric system. Galileo supported this theory and published a book about the observations he made in the sky with a telescope. Galileo came into conflict with the Catholic church over his support of this theory. Galileo was put on trial for saying the sun was the center of the solar system and they wanted him not to teach it anymore because they thought the theory was wrong. They then put him on house arrest.

Scientific Revolution

Scientific Revolution is a way scientists find out if a scientific theory is true or not by experimenting. They would experiment over and over until they prove or disprove an idea wrong. An example of this can be when Aristotle said that if you drop two things that wheigh differently, the heaveier one will fall faster than the lighter one. People thought this was true for 1,500 years. Then, Galleio tested this and proved him wrong. That can be an example of scientific revolution.

Evolution Vs Creation

The theory of evolution is that all living things came from something else way before them. The theory is trying to say that every thing has always been changing and evolving slowly over the years. Species from earlier times have just passed on their genes to different generations and made different species.

The belief of creation is saying that all living things have been created by God. This is a religious belief that many people believe in. This is believed by religions like Christian, Hinduism, Islams, and the Jewish.

They both have good reasons but, evolution makes more sense.
